About This Wine Region:
On the slopes of Riknik Hill, just south of the town of Šentjur and a short drive east of Slovenia’s third largest city Celje, sit the vineyards of Aci Urbajs. The area has a wine going tradition that literally goes back thousands of years, as attested to by the archeological remains that have been discovered here, many of which can be visited as part of a large open-air archeological park not far from the Urbajs farm. It was partly the influence of this long and storied heritage that since 1999 the affable Aci has dedicated his vineyards to strictly organic farming in accordance with the biodynamic methods of the Demeter Association, the world’s only certifier of biodynamic farms. The wine itself is top quality, and many special varieties are regularly produced, including late harvest vintages, ice wine and several that are produced without sulphur, all of which are aged in large oak casks.
